Attock (Urdu: اٹک) is a district and city in Pakistan located in the northern border of the province Punjab. It is a border district on the river Indus. The district is named after a historic town on Indus river with same name.
Attock District was constituted in 1904. The district was named as Campbellpur after the name of Sir Campbell who laid foundation stone of Campbellpur City in 1908 a few kilometers south-east of old Attock Khurd town. The name Attock was adopted in 1978 for the city.
Attock Khurd has a rich history. The great mathematician and grammarian, Panini was born here in 520 BC. Akbar the Great built the fort in 1581, which has witnessed countless battles and skirmishes between the Sikhs and the Afghans.
Attock has histroy of first oil well in Khore in 1946 and has oil and gas field Dakhini near Jand.
Covering an area of 6857 square kilometers Attock have following six tehsils (sub-districts).
Prominent areas in the district are (ttock, Jand, Fatehjang, Pindigheb, Hasanabdal, Hazro, Chach, Chhachh, Ghorghushti, Kamra, Sanjwal, Daurdad, Attock Khurd, Attock Fort, Kala Chitta, Attock Cantt, Shadi Khan, Mukhad, Sarwana, Malhoo, Nartopa, Bangi,Daman, and Kund National Park,Thatta.
Attock has extreme hot and cold climate. The maximum temperature reaches 40C. The Northern part is more humid with comparatively moderate climate as compared to Southern part of the district. The land mainly comprises hills, plateaus and dissected plains with river Indus flowing on Western and Northern sides of the district while river Haro coming from Haripur passes through the Attock Tehsil on the North of Kala Chitta Range. The area North of River Haro is a flood plain with fertile soil. The average annual rainfall in the district is 783 mm. Yaseen khalah is one of the obutifull vallgae in attock located couple of miles from Hazro. Phamgi sutan thangi, Natopa mara shangi, Hazro mara thana, Yaseen mara thakana.
